Last week, we tackled overcoming self-doubt as a new entrepreneur. It was a deep dive into recognizing self-doubt as a normal part of the entrepreneurial process and reframing it as a stepping stone for growth. This week, we’re continuing on the same path, taking that conversation one step further by focusing on building confidence. A critical skill for every professional transitioning to entrepreneurship.
What if you’re not as capable as you think? What if your idea doesn’t work out? These questions can keep even the most skilled professionals from pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams. Confidence isn’t just a “nice-to-have” quality; it’s the fuel that drives every decision, every pitch, and every pivot on your journey.
The Problem: Navigating The Fear of Failure and Inadequacy
One of the biggest hurdles professionals face when transitioning to entrepreneurship is overcoming the fear of failure and inadequacy. Questions like, Am I really ready? Can I make this work? are common.
These doubts often stem from:
Comparison: Looking at established entrepreneurs and feeling miles behind.
Imposter Syndrome: Believing you don’t deserve your success or doubting your skills despite evidence to the contrary.
Uncertainty: Fear of the unknown when leaving a structured career for the unpredictability of entrepreneurship.
When I started coaching, I faced these same challenges. Despite having over two decades as an entrepreneur and professionally in operations and strategy, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was venturing into uncharted territory. The first time I pitched my services, I was nervous, questioning whether anyone would even care about what I had to offer.
It wasn’t easy, but I realized that confidence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you build.
Why Common Approaches Don’t Work
Many professionals attempt to build confidence in ways that don’t address the root of the problem. Let’s explore why these approaches often fall short:
Waiting Until You Feel Ready: Confidence doesn’t come from waiting. If you’re waiting for a magical moment where you feel 100% ready, you’ll likely never start.
Faking Confidence: The “fake it till you make it” approach can backfire if it feels inauthentic. Instead of empowering you, it adds pressure to maintain a facade.
Overloading on Knowledge: While learning is essential, consuming endless courses and books without taking action can lead to analysis paralysis.
These methods fail because they’re either passive or surface-level. Confidence comes from action, reflection, and growth, not from external validation or pretending to have it all together.
My Recommended Approach to Building Confidence
As a business coach, I’ve guided several professionals through the transition to entrepreneurship. Here’s a framework to help you build genuine, lasting confidence:
1. Start Small and Build Momentum
Confidence grows through action. Start with small, manageable steps that lead to quick wins. For example:
Test your business idea with a pilot program or minimal viable product (MVP).
Have one-on-one conversations with potential clients.
Share your business idea with a trusted mentor or peer.
When I launched my first coaching program, I started with free participants. Seeing their positive feedback gave me the confidence to scale.
2. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
Perfectionism is the enemy of confidence. Instead of aiming for flawless execution, aim for consistent improvement. Break your goals into smaller milestones and celebrate each achievement.
For instance, instead of waiting until my website was “perfect,” I launched it with the essentials and improved it over time based on user feedback. Every update felt like progress, and that built my confidence.
3. Reframe Your Mindset
Confidence starts in your mind. Replace limiting beliefs with empowering ones. For example:
Instead of: “I don’t know enough to do this,” say: “I’m learning and growing every day.”
Instead of: “I’m not as good as others,” say: “My unique perspective is my strength.”
Write down your doubts and challenge them with evidence of your skills, achievements, and potential.
4. Surround Yourself with Support
Confidence is contagious. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and coaches who believe in you and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. Sharing your challenges and successes with others normalizes the experience and provides valuable insights.
When I joined an entrepreneurial mastermind group, hearing others share their journeys reminded me that self-doubt is universal, and it gave me the courage to keep moving forward.
5. Embrace Feedback and Learn From It
Feedback is one of the most valuable tools for building confidence. Instead of fearing criticism, view it as an opportunity to grow. Ask for feedback from clients, mentors, or peers and use it to refine your approach.
Early in my journey, I asked clients for feedback after every session. Their insights not only helped me improve but also reinforced my confidence in my ability to deliver value.
6. Reflect and Celebrate Your Wins
Take time to reflect on your progress and achievements, no matter how small. Keep a journal of your successes and revisit it whenever self-doubt creeps in.
When I felt stuck, I would look back at my journal entries documenting milestones like landing my first client or hosting a successful workshop. These reminders gave me the motivation to keep going.
Why This Approach Works
This framework works because it focuses on action, mindset, and growth. By taking small steps, reframing your perspective, and surrounding yourself with support, you’re not just building confidence; you’re creating a foundation for long-term success.
My Journey
Confidence wasn’t something I had when I started SME Digital. It was something I built through trial, reflection, and persistence. Every time I took a step outside my comfort zone, I gained a little more confidence. Today, I’m passionate about helping others navigate this same journey because I know how transformative it can be.
Conclusion
Building confidence in your entrepreneurial journey is a process, not a destination. By starting small, focusing on progress, reframing your mindset, seeking support, embracing feedback, and celebrating your wins, you can navigate self-doubt and imposter syndrome with resilience and clarity.
